Learning Goals:
In the core curriculum, students will analyze, interpret and critique works of art, considering the role of formal methods and techniques, and historical contexts. In addition to intellectual engagement with the arts, students will also creatively engage with the arts through practice. In addition, students will gain

  • In depth appreciation of the conceptual framework of the ‘creative process’ as relates to art making in the contemporary context;
  • Expand upon existing knowledge of and skills with the media employed in this course, and extend the breadth of knowledge of art making materials and their application(s);
  • Understand both the subject at hand, and its permutations through the wider arena of society that this form of art engages with;
  • Acquire an in depth knowledge of the literature in the field and appreciate how this literature has been absorbed or rejected by artists or educators;
  • Engage effectively with others in a number of group activities that allow discussion, dialogue and debate and extend critical thinking within the course;
  • Present a process of active, creative research and study in an appropriate format, as will be discussed in class and with due time.

Course Outcomes:

  • Analyze and interpret the form and meaning of works of art by applying discipline-based critical vocabulary and theory to explore the work’s significance within appropriate contexts (e.g., historical, cultural, aesthetic); and
  • Participate actively in a creative process using practices and materials specific to an artistic medium in order to produce an object or event appropriate to the discipline.
  • Gain confidence of expression;
  • Develop new or augment existing art-critiquing skills;
  • Gain the ability to develop rigor in artworks from ideation through to execution; Set high expectations and standards;
  • Become immersed and learn to appreciate the creative process;
  • Enact CREATIVE research.
